The 12L14 carbon steel round rod has been cold drawn, has an unpolished (mill) surface, meets American Society for Testing and Materials International ASTM A108 specifications, and has a standard tolerance. The 12L14 carbon steel grade has low carbon content for strength comparable to 1212 carbon steel but includes lead for better machinability. The rod has been cold drawn, a room-temperature process of pulling metal through a die to create the shape.

Steel is an iron alloy with carbon and other elements that modify the steel to achieve specific properties.
